Day Thirty-eight

Happy happy happy at Joe's Cycle

Tony & Wade in the flying wedge at NCAA
Intelligent use of police resources in downtown.
High spinning George both on the road and in the museum.
Bigger than Hurley.
Robb's wife, Madeleine, didn't rent a car here but this would have been a good one for her if she needed one.

Definitely add Indianapolis to the list of cities to visit.

They seem to have done a good job planning. Both the Pacers and the Colts play in downtown venues and there’s a cozy new AAA ballpark that keeps people coming through the summer. The convention center is undergoing a massive expansion. I didn’t get along the entire canal walk but that area is developing nicely with museums, artwork, and mini-parks. All kinds of restaurants from pubs to upscale.

Indianapolis is a huge area because I guess they annexed a bunch of towns some years ago so it’s more like a county with a lot of villages and neighborhoods. It is the capitol of the state so there are lots of state buildings also.

We walked to the Indiana State Museum a few block from the hotel. Three floors where I spent almost 3 hours and could have stayed longer if I had the time. All the history, famous people, pop culture, industrialization, etc. I didn’t know that Gary was a planned town by US Steel and is named after the company’s (then) chairman. I didn’t know that Indiana limestone is frequently used for gargoyles including those on the Empire State Building. And hey, I didn’t know that David Letterman is a Hoosier.

The NCAA Hall of Fame is just across the canal walk and is probably worth a visit if you have active kids because there’s a lot of hands-on fun. That whole park area is beautiful. I didn’t know that men’s rowing is not an NCAA sport but women’s is. I wonder why?

Things worth returning for include a supposedly excellent art museum, the world’s largest children’s museum, Monument Circle, Lily House and some of the funky neighborhoods like Fountain Square.

The end of the day we got some rain so I had to grab a cab to Joe’s Cycle. I love the guys back at Trek Stop in Grafton but this place is off the scale cool. Shawn couldn’t wait to tell me about it yesterday. They only sell fixed gear, single speed, and track bikes. They have their own line of frames AND they have an ice cream bar featuring good flavors from a local creamery. If they added beer to the mix I’d still be there! 1. We were in Indianapolis years ago for a skating meet with the kids. We found Union Station - the downtown train station - to be a multi-story (all underground) city in itself!

You guys are missing a great Phil Liggat season on the Tour. He's been getting SO excited during some more active stages that he's been confusing the names of the riders (Paul Sherwin usually comes to his rescue) and has gotten SO excited a couple of times that he's lost his breath (and train of thought)!

Glad to see that you folks are staging your own "Tour de America" out in the great Mid-West. You're getting close - we can almost see the dust cloud coming on the horizon!
